The University of Oxford is offering a fully funded D.Phil. studentship in Geotechnical Engineering, focusing on nature-based and biomimetic foundation systems. This research will investigate how tree root architectures provide resistance to various loads and apply this understanding to develop innovative, sustainable foundation concepts.
The project aims to minimize embodied carbon and installation requirements in geotechnical applications by drawing inspiration from natural systems. It is open to both home and overseas students, covering course fees and providing a generous stipend.

About the Position
This studentship will initially explore the behavior of different tree root system architectures under vertical, horizontal, and moment loading using numerical modeling and physical tests. The findings will then inform the design and evaluation of biomimetic foundation concepts, which could be scaled for applications such as railway gantries, transmission towers, solar farm foundations, offshore renewable energy anchorages, or low-rise building foundations in remote areas.
Eligibility
- A first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honours (or equivalent) in Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or Physics.
- Previous study in Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Continuum Mechanics, or Mechanical component/materials testing.
- Excellent English written and spoken communication skills, meeting the University’s higher level entry requirements.
Benefits
- Course fees covered at the applicable home or overseas student rate.
- Tax-free maintenance grant (stipend) of approximately £21,805 per annum for 3.5 years.
